Keen runner Adam bought his mum a place in my Major Series South obstacle course race for Mother’s Day and – luckily – she loved it! Here’s their post-race interview:
WELL DONE FOR COMPLETING THE MAJOR SOUTH, CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELVES?
ADAM JACOBS: I’m Adam and I’ve run quite a few OCRs (Obstacle Course races) and do a lot of events with Mudstacle. This is my mum Caroline and this – an entry in today’s Major South run – was my Mother’s Day present this year!
AND HOW DID YOU TAKE THAT CAROLINE, WERE YOU PLEASED THAT THIS WAS YOUR PRESENT?
CAROLINE BELLAMY: I was actually scared witless but very excited.
AND NOW YOU’VE FINISHED IT, HOW WAS IT?
CAROLINE: It was the best thing, seriously, the most fun I’ve had in oh, I can’t remember, since we used to go on camp. It was absolutely awesome, it really was.
ADAM, YOU DID BOTH DISTANCES – THE 5K RUN WITH YOUR MUM, AFTER DOING THE 10K – YOU MUST HAVE REALLY ENJOYED IT?!
ADAM: I did both distances, yes, but I did the 10k on my own so I had a lot more fun on the 5k with my mum.
WHICH OF MY OBSTACLES DID YOU LIKE THE BEST?
CAROLINE: The mud! Whatever had mud with it was the best. Also the water ones, the cargo net, the disappearing bridges; they were good. I also liked the hay bales, and the last one where you had to climb up the laddery thing and come down it – I don’t know the technical terms!
ADAM: The A-frame, yes, that was good.
CAROLINE: They were all good.
ADAM, HOW MANY MAJOR SERIES RUNS HAVE YOU DONE AND HOW DID YOU FIND IT?
ADAM: Including today I’ve done 4. The Major South was absolutely brilliant. I noticed you’ve changed the course since last year, making a lot more use of the natural terrain around here, really good use of the hills and some nice new obstacles as well.
CAROLINE: It was a lot more hilly than I expected. I’ve never done the terrain where you’ve got the tufty grass and the trails. I hadn’t done that before so I found it very tiring. I’ve only really done road running before so that puffed me out a bit at the beginning, so the obstacles were the best bit for me.
DID YOU ENJOY MEETING MY TROOPS TODAY?
CAROLINE: Yes they were great, and we had some muddy hugs – unlike you, Major, keeping me at arms length in your precious uniform!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER MUMS OUT THERE WHO MIGHT BE TEMPTED TO DO ONE OF MY OBSTACLE COURSE RACES?
CAROLINE: Just do it, now, don’t wait! I cannot tell you how much fun we’ve had. I would just rave about it. It was awesome, it was absolutely awesome. And people who you’ve never seen in your life before, everyone was helping everyone else. We had mud fights – the mud fights were good! We also made mud angels – I’ve never seen one of them before. It was just, I can’t explain it, it was awesome, absolutely fantastic.
SO COMPARED TO YOUR BOXES OF CHOCOLATES AND BUNCHES OF FLOWERS, HOW MANY MARKS OUT OF TEN WOULD YOU GIVE THIS?
CAROLINE: This beats it hands down. 10 OUT OF 10. No, 12…or maybe even 20! It was really really the best thing.
WHEN IS YOUR NEXT EVENT THEN?
ADAM: Yes I was telling my mum on the way up here, it’s Mudstacle Mayhem tomorrow and after today, she’s coming along.
CAROLINE: As long as there’s no hills.
ADAM: There are no hills!
WELL I’LL LET YOU POLISH YOUR MEDAL AND GO AND GET SOME FOOD.
BOTH: Thank you! Burger time!
